Domestic Organic Waste Legislation – Reminder of legal obligations

All households generating organic waste are legally required to segregate this waste and dispose of it through the brown/organic bin system. By segregating organic waste it can be used to create compost and renewable energy, supporting Ireland’s environmental obligations, reducing landfill and helping meet EU recycling targets.

What Are My Options?

– Use your organic bin.

– Set up a composting unit at home – compliance with relevant environmental and public health legislation required.

– Take your organic waste to a recycling facility who has a waste license or waste facility permit for organic waste.

Penalties For Non-Compliance

Non-compliance is an offence. This can affect households that do not segregate their organic waste properly. The maximum fine is €75 per offence or legal proceedings.

What goes in my organic bin?

The brown bin for your organic and food waste only. This includes but is not limited to;

– Cooked & raw foods

– Napkins, paper plates, food wrapping etc.

– Grass cuttings, clippings, weeds, etc.

– Teabags, coffee grinds etc.

– Peelings and unwanted leftovers.
